DT

Design and technology to create and inspire our world!

The main emphasis of DT is based on three key areas which allow the children to design, make and evaluate products as well as developing their technical skills understanding. Each area has important features that ensure the children are able to design and create functional products and evaluate or assess their own designs based on their key learning objective. Building on these skills will enable the children to leave at the end of KS1 equipped with these fundamental skills.

To find out more information about the Design technology curriculum at Calmore Infant School select the tabs below.

Food nutrition also features strongly across the three year group DT learning journeys to help educate children in making healthy choices for life, understanding where food comes from to underpin their knowledge on food and nutrition.

Design and Technology is included within the Arts and Design (EAD) area of learning & development of the EYFS curriculum. It also includes elements of other areas of learning & development including Understanding the World (UW) & Physical Development (PD). Designing and making is about the way in which children learn about construction processes and the tools and techniques that can be used to assemble materials creatively and safely. Tools allow for effective practise and freedom to explore.

Planning will be guided by the EYFS Statutory Educational Programmes and Development Matters (see Development Matters document for details)

Design technology in early years.

Woodwork is hugely popular in Year R as well as providing a rich source of enjoyment as well as learning. The impact is profound and long term. Deep levels of engagement and intense concentration are common and the children often remain involved in their explorations for extended periods.

Woodworking allows children many opportunities including; expressing their imagination, problem solving and sustained perseverance with challenging tasks. The learning outcomes have been remarkable and encompass all areas of the EYFS.

Effective Design technology at Calmore should include:

· Building on from children’s real life experiences.

· The design and making process is open ended.

· The design process may include, drawings or discussions.

· It can be child or teacher led.

· It’s fun and intuitive.
