What do we want for our children at Calmore?
What is PDL? –
PDL is a term introduced by Hampshire meaning Personal Development Learning and is the over-arching title of PSHE and RSE.
Through participation in the PSHE and RSE curriculum at Calmore Infant School we intend for all children to develop the skills, knowledge and understanding to grow and develop into healthy, independent and responsible members of society.
We take a holistic approach to the children's development throughout Calmore. We recognise the importance of not only how they develop intellectually but also spiritually, morally and socially. This is underpinned across the whole school with our learning heroes. Our curriculum allows the children a wide range of learning experiences and skills to develop the cultural capital that is important to succeed in their lives.
We recognise that children are growing up in an ever-changing world, we help our children to establish a strong understanding of diversity and awareness of others. We encourage children to take an active role in our school community to support their understanding of the roles and responsibilities they will encounter later in life.
Our Calmore curriculum is inclusive and accessible in order that we allow all children to maximise their opportunities to know more, remember more and understand more. We have a flexible curriculum that supports all children throughout the school. We understand that each child and group of children have different experiences, therefore we adapt our approach to different aspects of the curriculum depending on the children and these experiences.
From September 2020, sex and relationships education (SRE) is being replaced by compulsory relationships and sex education (RSE). The following will become mandatory as part of the PSHE curriculum: Relationships education in all primary schools. ... Health education, including mental health, in all state funded schools

How does this look for our children?
We strive to provide our children with learning opportunities across and beyond the curriculum, in specific PDL lessons, circle time, special school projects and other activities that enrich pupils' experiences. There are always occasions where teachers may feel it necessary to teach PSHE as a result of an issue arisen in their own class. We use Images, our School Values, British Values and SMSC discussions and displays to provide further opportunities for children. Through PDL sessions, links with the local communities, visitors and national and international events we provide enrichment opportunities to contextualise learning. PSHE is an important part of school assemblies were children's spiritual, moral, social and cultural curiosity is stimulated, challenged and nurtured
What difference does it make?
All children will understand the importance of PDL, British Values and the effects it can have on life in and out of school. This will be shown through pupil voice and Holistic Learning. Teaching pupils to stay safe and healthy, by building self-esteem, resilience and empathy, an effective PDL programme can tackle barriers to learning, raise aspirations, and improve the life chances of the most vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils. The skills and attributes developed through PDL education are also shown to increase academic attainment and attendance rates, particularly among pupils eligible for free school meals, as well as improve employability and boost social mobility. It helps them understand how they are developing personally and socially, and tackles many of the moral, social and cultural issues that are part of growing up. Our curriculum allows pupils to learn about rights and responsibilities and appreciate what it means to be a member of a diverse society. Our children are encouraged to develop their sense of self-worth by playing a positive role in contributing to Calmore school life, the wider community and beyond!
